\nAsiya<\/i>: Arabic female ‘ism\/given name ((\u201cPeriod Arabic Names and Naming Practices,\u201d Da’ud ibn Auda, http:\/\/heraldry.sca.org\/names\/arabic-naming2.htm<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Alzahar<\/i>: the closest we find is al-Zahariyyah. <\/i>This <\/i>is a constructed feminine nisba<\/i> meaning “of the town of Zahara”. Zahara<\/i> is the name of several towns in Spain according to Academy of St. Gabriel report #3069, footnotes [1], [5], and [6], found at http:\/\/www.panix.com\/~gabriel\/public-bin\/showfinal.cgi?3069+0<\/a> (also a no-copy source.) At least one of those towns is dated to period; footnote [5] refers to the seizure of Zahara in 1481.<\/p>\n

Da’ud’s article suggests that a geographic masculine nisba<\/i> is formed by converting the terminal vowel to -i<\/i> when the place name ends in a vowel, then using the prefix al-<\/i>; Zahara<\/i> would seem to form the nisba<\/i> al-Zahari<\/i>. He also states that a masculine nisba<\/i> can usually be feminized by changing the terminal -i<\/i> to -iyyah<\/i>, so al-Zahariyyah<\/i> may be the form for “woman of Zahara.”
\nThe client wants a female name and is most interested in the meaning and language\/culture (none given). She would like it authentic for 15th<\/sup> C. Arabic.<\/p>\n

Ivanovich<\/i>: Russian, \u201cson of Ivan\/Ioann.\u201d His father’s registered name is Ivan Petrovich. <\/i>Patronymics with the suffix -ich<\/i> were popular in Novgorod and Pskov amongst the upper classes, added directly to the standard -ov<\/i> patronymic (Ivanov).<\/i> By the 16th and 17th centuries Moscow had restricted the use of the “-vich” suffix to only the highest dignitaries (i.e., boiars and high court officials) (\u201cGoldschmidt’s Dictionary of Period Russian Names \u2013 Grammar,\u201d Paul Goldschmidt<\/a>, http:\/\/heraldry.sca.org\/names\/paul\/zgrammar.html<\/a>).<\/p>\n

The Islamic name is based on the Moors occcupying Italy in 827; this occurred in Sicily and in some areas of Southern Italy.
\nD’Santangelo<\/i>: Monte Sant’Angelo is a town of Apulia, southern Italy, in the province of Foggia, on the southern slopes of Monte Gargano. Monte Sant’Angelo as a town appeared only in the 11th century. Between 1081 and 1103, Monte Sant’Angelo was the capital of a large Norman dominion under the control of Count Henry, who was a vassal of the Byzantine Empire. The grotto which houses the Sanctuary of Saint Michael the Archangel where according to legend, St. Michael appeared in 490, 492 and 493, has been the site of many famous pilgrimages, which started from Mont Saint-Michel. While all internet entries demonstrate the placename as Sant’Angelo, the client’s documentationDizionario dei cognomi pugliesi <\/i>by Maria Giovanna Arcamone shows it as Sant\u00e0ngelo. I think the article might be more accurate as di or de (the client would like a Southern Italian name, and these are more usual than da). 
\n<\/i>According to SENA Appendix A, double given names in Italian are permitted. SENA Appendix B allows combination of Italian and Arabic name elements.

Originally blazoned as Or, in pale a mace fesswise and a shark naiant contourny azure<\/i>., I reblazoned it, as the shark is visually larger than the weapon and to avoid a potential Unity of Posture issue.<\/p>\n

Orrin Darius <\/b>(BoA): NEW NAME and NEW DEVICE<\/p>\n

Sable, two serpents in a Bouchier knot, that to dexter Or and to sinister inverted argent. <\/i>
\nOrrin<\/i> is an English male given name; Orrin<\/i> Thomas Kebble has a birth date of 1554 in England, and his son Orrin<\/i>James Kebble was born in 1575 (https:\/\/www.familysearch.org\/ark:\/61903\/2:1:M3VN-6RG<\/a>). Darius<\/i> is found as an English surname for Helena Darius,<\/i> with a christening date of 15 Novmber 1635 in Hope, Derbyshire, England ( Batch C03111-6<\/a>, https:\/\/familysearch.org\/ark:\/61903\/1:1:JWQM-ZJL<\/a>) her father was Petri Darius. The client desires a male name and is most interested in the sound of the name.<\/p>\n

While the use of serpents as elements of a knot seems reasonable, the client isn’t quite sure how to elaborate on the design if this is in conflict (or if there is a conflict at all). He asks for assistance please.<\/p>\n

Russell Rusli Marteinnson<\/b> (GM): NEW NAME<\/p>\n

Rusli:<\/i> ON byname, \u201ccollector of odds and ends\u201d (The Old Norse Name<\/i>, Geirr Bassi Haraldsson, p. 26).
\nMarteinnson:<\/i> Marteinn<\/i> is an ON masculine given name (ibid. p. 13), and the patronymic is constructed as –nn > -ns<\/i>, plus the suffix, so this would likely be Marteinsson<\/i>.<\/p>\n

There appears to be a given name missing here, and he will use his legal given name, Russell. However, he would much prefer Rusli Marteinnson<\/i> if it could be found that Rusli is a given name.<\/p>\n

The client’s legal name is Alexandra Priest<\/i>. ffride wlffsdotter notes: <\/b>The Administrative Handbook III.A.10 says that you only need a small change in pronunciation, to clear “conflict” with their mundane name: “A small change in the name is sufficient for registration, such as the addition of a syllable or a spelling change that changes the pronunciation. However, a change to spelling without a change in pronunciation is not sufficient. For example, Alan Miller could not register the name Alan Miller or Allan Miller but he could register the name Alan the Miller. Further, submitters may register either a name or armory which is a close variant of a name or insignia they use outside the Society, but not both.” (http:\/\/heraldry.sca.org\/admin.html<\/a>) “Priest” to “Prestre” would change the pronunciation, surely?<\/p>\n

It can, however, be dated later, to 1287, for Alpinus, canon of Dunblane, and for Alpin mac Donald, a witness for a charter of the halfpenny land of the church of Killilan that was granted to the monks of Paisley in 1295 (Black, p. 20, s.n. Alpin, Alpine).<\/p>\n

Iago ab Adam comments: <\/b>Precedent (on my daughter’s device submission!) states: \u201cThe default orientation for animate charges not affronty or displayed on a bend is bendwise sinister; in other words, they are climbing upwards along the bend.\u201d [Joye de Beumund. September 2011 via An Tir] This would seem to imply that the default for displayed charges is bendwise (which fits with period examples of eagles displayed on a bend that I’ve seen). So let’s go with: Sable, on a bend between two bears rampant argent a bat bendwise sinister sable<\/i>.<\/p>\n

The name was registered August 1971. The original arms were registered at the same time.<\/p>\n

The augmentation (with the charged heart) was awarded to His Excellency 6 May 2017 by Morgan and Elizabeth, as part being made Premier of the Order of Glory, Royal Peer.<\/p>\n

ffride wlffsdotter comments: \u201cLind col. 757 sn. Makan points to a Makan st\u00fdtima\u00f0r ca. 1178. He says it’s “antagl. utl\u00e4nding” or “presumably a foreigner.” The client has assumed that if names ending in –dan<\/i> become –danar<\/i> then it follows that Makan becomes Makanar. I honestly don’t know.\u201d We are clueless as well.<\/p>\n

Krist\u00f3f\u00f3rus Jafnkollr<\/b>: NEW NAME and DEVICE: Per fess azure and sable, in pale a demi-sun Or eclipsed sable issuant from chief and a sea-serpent Or, a bordure parted bordurewise wavy azure and argent.<\/i><\/p>\n

Leofric Hield<\/b>: NEW NAME and DEVICE: Argent, a cow statant sable with the head of a jester gardant proper, headed gules.<\/i><\/p>\n

There was some comment on the emblazon: Michael Gerard Curtememoire: \u201cAll cows registered in the OSCAR era have had visible, though never prominent, udders. Whether the lack of one is enough to sustain a charge of not being in period style I do not know.\u201d and Madoc Arundel: \u201c<\/b>There is nothing remotely bovine about the beast, given the lack of the head (which bears most of the identifying features of a cow) and udder. As depicted, this could be canine or feline just as easily.\u201d The beast is drawn very much like the marginalia that it is taken from. Looking closely, the beast has split hooves, like that of a bovine. I can’t comment on the lack of udders.<\/p>\n

Lorelei Beguine<\/b> (BoA): NEW NAME and DEVICE: Argent, a swan rousant contourny and a base azure<\/i>.<\/p>\n

ffride wlffsdotter notes An Index to the Given Names in the 1292 Census of Paris<\/i> by Lord Colm Dubh has: Dame Ade la b\u00e9guine, Beneoite la b\u00e9guine, Juliote la b\u00e8guine,Perronele la b\u00e9guine (http:\/\/heraldry.sca.org\/names\/paris.html<\/a>). SENA Appendix A says that French bynames may omit the article, or admit it. So “Lorelei Beguine” should be OK.
\nCoblaith Muimnech notes Sara L. Uckelman’s DRAFT: Names in the 1292 census of Paris <\/i>indicates one instance of la Beguine<\/i> in the source material. (http:\/\/www.ellipsis.cx\/~liana\/names\/french\/1292paris.pdf)<\/p>\n

The original submission, Argent, a swan rousant contourny azure.<\/i>, conflicted with Svana Karlsd\u00f3ttir’s device, Argent, a swan azure., <\/i>with only 1 DC for the orientation of the bird. Adding the base gives the second needed DC to clear the conflict.<\/p>\n

Malik of the High Desert<\/b>: NEW NAME and DEVICE: Per pale indented argent and sable, two bats counterchanged.<\/i><\/p>\n

Michael Gerard Curtememoire notes that 0http:\/\/heraldry.sca.org\/loar\/2015\/01\/15-01lar.html#123<\/a>), Da’ud ibn Ma’bad al-Wadi seems to assume that generic locatives (a nisba<\/i> in this case) are acceptable in Arabic.<\/p>\n

Margaret:<\/i> a very popular English female given name dated specifically to 1564 (\u201cFeminine Given Names in A Dictionary of English Surnames: <\/i>Margaret,\u201d Talan Gwynek, https:\/\/www.s-gabriel.org\/names\/talan\/reaney\/reaney.cgi?Margaret).<\/p>\n

Busshenell:<\/i> registered name of her grandmother, Ann Busshenell of Tylehurst<\/a>. Joan Busshenell has a christening date of 7 May 1565 in Thatcham, Berkshire, England Batch K15779-1<\/a>(https:\/\/www.familysearch.org\/search\/record\/results?count=20&query=%2Bsurname%3ABusshenell~<\/a>%20%2Bbirth_place%3AEngland~%20%2Bbirth_year%3A1200-1600<\/a>~).<\/p>\n

\nNo evidence was presented, and none could be found, showing that the practice of surmounting charges covering only secondary charges when a primary charge is present was done in period. Absent such evidence, armory with surmounting charges that do not overlie the primary charge will be returned.
\nTh<\/b>eodora Akropolitissa. <\/b>Device. Argent, a bull’s head cabossed and in chief a double-bitted axe gules, a bordure embattled azure. 
\n<\/i>While blazoned on the Letter of Intent as a primary head with its horns crossing the per fess line and a secondary axe, commenters felt that the small difference in size between the charges gave the impression of a single co-primary charge group. As a result, this device must be returned for violating SENA A3D1, Clarity of Charge Groups
\nUpon resubmission, we encourage the artist to draw the bull’s head larger, and the axe either smaller or oriented fesswise to better fill the available space.
\nVarinn inn Spaki. <\/b>Badge. Argent, within the horns of a decrescent gules in pale a wolf’s head cabossed and in saltire two roses sable, slipped and leaved vert.
